Course 4: Treatment: Course

This course reviews the pharmacologic management of MS. It explores current disease modifying therapies (DMTs) and associated nursing issues. Symptom management is discussed with an emphasis on pharmacologic management.

After completing this course, you should be better able to:

  • Explain the impact of relapses on an individual patient
  • Explain the management of a patient suffering their first MS attack
  • Describe the management of relapse symptoms
  • Describe the benefits and side effects of steroid therapy
  • Summarise the treatments commonly used for people with MS
  • Distinguish between immunomodulators and immunosuppressants
  • Explain the risks and benefits of therapy
  • Explore the role of the MS Nurse in encouraging adherence
  • Summarise the adverse events of therapy
  • Summarise the symptoms that people with MS may experience
  • Describe the management of these symptoms

Target Audience

This activity has been developed to meet the educational needs of nurses who have an interest in optimising the management of people with MS.

Duration

The estimated time to complete this course is 10 hours.

Method of Participation

There are no fees for participating and receiving CME credit for this activity. Participants must:

  1. Read the learning objectives
  2. Participate in the entire educational activity, consisting of 5 foundation courses
  3. Complete the exam for each course by recording the best answer to each question; a 75% pass mark is required
  4. Complete the feedback survey

A certificate of completion will be available to download at the end of each course. Upon successful completion of all 5 courses which make up the foundation programme, you will be provided with a statement of accreditation which you can download, save and print.
