DMSG (Germany) and MS Nurse PRO - Become an MS nurse/MS therapy manager

Since 2007, the Federal Association of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) has been offering independent, part-time professional training to become an MS nurse/MS therapy manager.

The DMSG's advanced training includes:

  • three intensive seminar weekends
  • two three-day internships in a recognized MS center
  • a project assignment
  • and written tests to test knowledge.

During the three intensive seminar weekends, the theoretical and practical training content is passed on by experienced MS experts, and comprehensive work materials (manual) facilitate in-depth self-study.

The imparting of new knowledge on causes, diagnostics, and therapy is just as important as learning and applying MS-specific assessment scales, interviewing techniques, and communication.

High efficiency is guaranteed by limiting the number of participants to a maximum of 20.

A pre-requisite to enter the programme is the succesful completion of the MS Nurse PRO Foundation Programme on MS Nursing.

For registration and information on the fees, you can visit this website of DMSG.

This 3-month Module is aimed at giving you the tools and support you need to be able to put your ideas into practice. We will help you to use your knowledge and experience of MS care to really make a practical difference in your service.  Don’t worry if you don’t have any ideas just yet – so long as you want to make a difference, you will get plenty of ideas from studying on the Module!

The course lead is an MS nurse from the UK with over 30 years of experience in MS Nursing and lots of practical experience of service development within MS nursing. The Module includes 1:1 online tutorial sessions, group drop in and teaching sessions (which will cover many of the study skills you will need to complete the final assignment) and email feedback on your assignment whenever you need it (in your preferred language).

You may be able to source some or all of the funding you need from external sources

See below for some suggestions:

• Some employers will have money set aside specifically to help staff meet their training needs. It is important to have a conversation with your line manager and/or lead for education within your service to ask them about funding opportunities and whether you would be entitled to any study leave.
• If you work with one or more Neurologists, they may be able to advise you of local sources of funding support so do discuss your plans with them if you can
• Pharmaceutical companies have to spend designated amounts of money each year on health professional education and are often able to provide financial support to cover costs of further training such as the FWBL module offered here.
• You may know of local or national MS charities who would be prepared to give you some or all of the funding required – you could offer to provide them with information about your service improvement once complete and perhaps talk to other staff or people living with MS at one of their meetings once you have completed the project. Some organisations may have educations grants available which you can apply for.
• Increasing numbers of people set up a Crowd Funding page which could be something you consider. There is a lot of help and advice about how best to do this on their website.

Hear it from PREVIOUS students

We have some great examples of service improvement work already carried out by previous students!

Team

"The education provided through the project enables nurses to increase and expand their knowledge about MS and the care of the MS patient. The programme is a bridge that connects academic knowledge with clinical practice by answering questions that nurses face in daily practice. At the same time nurses through the assignment they write attempt, with the help of highly experienced in clinical practice supervisors, to apply the knowledge they have gained in practice and help the services they work in to provide real solutions to the problems they face thus increasing the quality of care for the MS patient".

Eirini Samdanidou, 2022 Cohort

Team

‘‘This course gave me an opportunity to have more in-depth exploration of how we can put into practice the theory we have learned. I had the great opportunity from this module, to translate my experience into academic scripts or so to say in written words that a tiny but innovative approach to address the needs of MS patients could be helpful for their MS management and reduce the caseload of the MS nurses. Overall, my experience is highly positive, the module is relevant to MS-related professionals, tutors are extremely supportive and the access to the learning materials is brilliant in the BCU.”

Bhawani Mainali, 2022 Cohort
