Call for Contribution: Supervise a Master’s Thesis on MS Nursing in Europe

Are you a university professor overseeing master’s students in their final thesis project?

Then this call is for you.

MS Nurse PROfessional if seeking to collaborate with a university professor who would be interested in suggesting and guiding a Master’s student in carrying out a master’s thesis project focused on MS nursing practices in 6 European countries (including the country in which you work).

Context

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common chronic neurological conditions in Europe, affecting over one million people. MS nurses are central to care delivery, ensuring continuity across the patient journey: from treatment monitoring and symptom management to education, psychosocial support, and coordination within multidisciplinary teams.

Despite their indispensable role, the scope of MS nursing practice differs widely between European countries. In some healthcare systems, nurses are empowered to prescribe or adjust therapies, refer patients to other specialists, and participate fully in integrated care teams. In others, they face excessive caseloads, limited autonomy, or a lack of recognition and support structures. These variations have a direct impact on both the quality of care for people with MS and on the professional wellbeing of nurses.

With the rise of new therapies, digital tools, and evolving patient needs, understanding how MS nursing is organised across Europe has never been more important. Mapping current practices and identifying unmet needs will provide valuable evidence to guide education, policy, and advocacy efforts in the years ahead.

Objective of the Thesis

The proposed master thesis will explore current MS nursing practices and future nursing needs across six European countries (At least 5 of the following countries + your own: United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, and the Czech Republic).

The student will conduct approximately 25 online qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in each country, including:

  • representatives of healthcare authorities,
  • members of nursing and healthcare education systems, and
  • practicing MS nurses.

Contacts of these stakeholders can be provided by the MS Nurse PRO Scientific Committee.

The research will aim to answer the following guiding questions (this can be finetuned based on a conversation with the promotor of the thesis and the MS Nurse PRO Scientific Committee):

  • How many neuroscience nurses are registered in each country, and what roles do they play in MS care?
  • How are nurses and neuroscience nurses educated in each country?
  • What practice guidelines exist for neuroscience nurses related to MS, NMO or MOGAD, and how do these compare across countries?
  • Compared to the practice guidelines, how do nurses operate in reality in two different healthcare settings (e.g. outpatient clinic and rehabilitation centre).
  • Compared to the competencies and roles defined in the MS Nurse PRO curriculum, what gaps can be identified in actual nursing practice?

The findings will contribute to wider academic and policy discussions on the future of nursing in MS care.

If you are able and willing to help bring this research to life, we warmly invite you to submit your interest!

Deadline for show of interest is end 2025 latest with the thesis project to be developed in first six to 8 months of 2026. We will process show of interests on a rolling basis and all submissions will get a response.
