The 2021 EMSP Conference was centered around the theme of ‘MS Care in a Changing World’. Within that, one must look at the future of MS care and how a holistic approach to MS treatment can improve the quality of life of people living with MS.
The development of biomarkers leading to personalized treatment, potential shorter drug development, and patient-centered treatment highlight great progress in the future of MS Care.
The evolution of MS research and treatment has also impacted nursing care to a great extent. The new holistic approach to treatment, where the focus is not placed solely on research and development but also on a deeper understanding of the patients, their lifestyles, and their particular needs. Moreover, with MS being considered a heterogeneous disease, meaning one therapy does not fit all patients, MS nursing is particularly interesting. MS nurses have a multifaceted profession that includes not only understanding the clinical particularities of MS but also having the skills to connect, educate others, advocate for communities, and counsel both patients and carers.
Hence, improving the quality of life of people with MS is possible through a holistic approach to treatment and nursing.
