| Usually there are checks to ensure the immune system does not react to a person’s own proteins and cells (self-antigens). In some patients, when the immune system is dysregulated, tolerance to some self-antigens is disrupted and autoreactive T and B cells mistakenly damage a person’s own tissues. Multiple sclerosis is one such ‘autoimmune’ disease. |
